When All Else Fails I Post a Poem

Autumn leaves are slowing drifting,
Telling us it’s time for fall.
Colors swirling as the wind blows,
Take a breath and see it all.

Changing seasons, time is ticking,
Drawing us along our way.
Winter’s coming, cold is nearer,
With the passing of each day.

Cycles swirling all around us,
Knowing what is coming next.
Spring will surface, Summer splashes,
Back to fall, some like it best!

With the seasons we will travel,
As we live here on this earth.
Enjoying each time as it passes,
Since we started at our birth.

Be Careful What You Wish For

The banana turns from green to yellow.

"Don't be sad you little fellow,
Turning shades is what you do.
Soon you'll be another hue."

The banana began to turn a frown.

"I just don't want to turn all brown!
Please help me from this rotten fate!"

So then, per request, the banana I ate.

Brewing in My Brain

I’ve got a little thought that’s been brewing in my brain
Like a tiny coffee bean, ground and placed upon a flame
A little percolator is really all it needs
To grow into its place here in reality

This little thought is brewing; it takes some time you know
For such a timid thought to be tended so it grows
With time and some attention, this thought may brew to be
A grand idea, perhaps an invention to help society
A poem or words of wisdom, a story, quote or trend
The possibilities, they may simply never end

So next time a thought is brewing, humor me if you will
Take time to place your mug out to see how it might fill
These gentle whispers, nudges, & ideas they come and go
If we do not pay them attention, the world will never know
Of these tiny little treasures that started off so small
They could have brewed into fruition, to influence us all

OH Jonas Bros- An Ode to a Bad Tweenage Fashion Trend

OH Jonas Bros
Where do you go,
To buy those pants that you love so?
Those skinny jeans are much too tight.
I especially don’t like them in white!

There is one thing I need to know,
It’s a silly thought, but here it goes,
How do you get them off at night?
I’d imagine the scene would be quite a fright!
With pliers and a brother near,
"Don’t rip my pants, careful near the rear!"
They’re plastered on, it’s no surprise
They’re hard to get off, even though they’re low rise.

Round the ankles, don’t they hurt?
Please do not tuck in your shirt!
Heartthrobs to tweens you three boys are,
What is the deal, can these fans not see far?

I like you boys for you’re unique,
Good boys that don’t behave like freaks,
But with these pants you can’t carry on.
Juniors or women’s pants you mustn’t don!

Oh Jonas Bros,
Please let me know,
Why you wear your pants just so.
I fear a trend is coming on,
I hope this fad will soon be gone!!!

Blind to Our Blessings

The American Dream= More is better. Our culture does a terrific job of tapping into our brains and impacting our belief systems. Whether it's Billy Mays trying to sell me the POWER of Orange Glo household cleaners, the neighbor driving the Mercedes Benz, or the fashion-plate at work who never wears the same thing twice, we are constantly impeded upon with messages that We must have it! We must get more! We must have the most, the biggest, the best.

Stop for a moment. Re-read that paragraph. Go, now. Do it. Do you realize what faulty logic our culture is based off of? Don't get me wrong, I like new things. They're shiny and pretty, or is it that they make me feel shiny and pretty? Either way- new stuff rocks. However, thinking beyond our earthly bodies puts everything into perspective. Yes, new stuff rocks, but does it last? Old stuff, was once new as well.... This is no new lesson for me- simply a reminder. As I dream about my new place- I've been slightly worried that I've chosen to purchase a one bedroom condo- and not two bedrooms. BUT I am reminding myself, that I do not need any more. I am spoiled in so many ways- and really, I prefer to follow the motto of "Less Is More." (And no, Christina, I'm not talking about the guy we knew in college named Less who was slightly overweight. LOL! I know. We're horrible. But, oh, how we had fun at ISU!)
Now if only I could apply the "Less is More" motto to my wardrobe & accessories. drat.

Anyway- this weekend at church the message was about wonder, or more specifically, appreciating all of God's creation and taking the time to notice the small stuff and genuinely say "Wow!" at all of the amazing sights, smells, textures, and sounds of our world. Most importantly- recognizing the wonder of the people we love. The ones in our lives who are most important to us and the things we love about them. My homework was to share mine with my family. So here's my list (I have recently confirmed that all of these family members are regulars around here or are indeed stalking my blog, so I figured now's a good a time as any to share this!) :) :

One thing I love about Mom is her generosity, creativity, and her joy for life (oh and definitely her outgoing "people-person" personality)!
One thing I love about Dad is his hard-work ethic, generosity, unconditional love, and willingness to help his kids in anyway he can.
One thing I love about Sally is her honesty, wisdom, strong faith, and sense of humor.
One thing I love about Billy is his quiet, sensitive kind-heart/caring, and his wicked (aka awesome) sense of humor.
One thing I love about Tyler is his friendliness- non-judgemental attitude towards all people, joyful personality, outgoing-ness and knowledge of all things mechanical that I am clueless about.

These are just a few things about each of you guys that came to mind first. I know I did more than one, but I couldn't help myself! Love you!

:: End Family Love Fest::

Ok seesh- I had no intention of this post ending up where it's at. That was supposed to be an introduction to a poem I wrote. I am always working on not caring what others think so much, so I plan to continue to post whatever the heck I want on here (within reason of course), even if I don't think it's very good. So, back to my title, I give to you a poem which I entitled:

Blind To Our Blessings

We have the sight to see the world, yet lack vision to know,
All the blessings in our lives, they’re everywhere we go.

We are blind to our blessings
Wishing, hoping, waiting
Never fully satisfied in finding what we think we need
We are blind to our blessings
Asking, begging, bargaining
Waiting on such desired things and opportunities

If we stop just for a moment and reflect on our God’s wonder
The miracles around us from a blade of grass to thunder
Crickets chirping in the fields, sunshine lighting up our days
Our God has blessed each of us in unbelievable ways

We are blind to our blessings
Wishing, hoping, waiting
Never fully satisfied in finding what we think we need
We are blind to our blessings
Asking, begging, bargaining
Waiting on such desired things and opportunities

Ponder on your family, with you through thick and thin
God designed such love and support to come from your friends and kin
Human lives intertwined, brought together with a bond to stay
God planned it from the start; He knew the way such things would play

We are blind to our blessings
Wishing, hoping, waiting
Never fully satisfied in finding what we think we need
We are blind to our blessings
Asking, begging, bargaining
Waiting on such desired things and opportunities

Caring for our every need, a place to rest our heads at night,
Good health and wisdom to know what is wrong from what is right
A job to do, loved ones to love
These blessings bestowed to us from above

So what is it you’re waiting on? Wishing and hoping for?
Waiting on God to answer you and open up such doors
Perhaps you need to recognize that things will come and go
Bigger, better, newer, younger, may always taunt you so
But every treasure in this world will one day fade away
The good news is God’s grace and blessings are here for you today.

Could it be all that you needed you had right from the start?
The Love of God can surely fill your heart
If you choose to open up your eyes and truly, fully see
That the blessings you’ve been waiting on
Were not what you thought you would need.

I won’t be blind to my blessings
Loving, praising, appreciating
Satisfied with all I have as I go throughout my days
I won’t be blind to my blessings
Trusting God, we walk together, discovering what’s next
Knowing He will provide in His most perfect way.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Happy Tuesday!

Poetry: Double Delight

Full of It

If you say I’m full of IT, you may very well be right
But what is IT I’d argue, I can sure put up a fight
I’d say IT's creativity, ideas, fears, hopes, and dreams
You’d say IT's self absorption, excuses, hiding from reality

I’d much more like to ponder on my happy thoughts than yours
For my IT has the power to open up new doors
Your IT stops one in his tracks, he turns and just sits down
My IT sends him running past the obstacles around

It’s all about perspective, yes anyone can see
For we all are full of something, what will your IT be?

If Something’s Wrong, Everything’s Alright

I am in full procrastination mode. I have to be ready to leave for AZ when I leave my house for work Thursday morning. That means sub plans for three full days need to be completed in addition to my suitcase being packed. Instead of working on these items, I wrote a poem about the rhythm of life. While I am a bit stressed to get all this done and even to go on this trip since it will be tough to see my G-ma in the hospital, and my G-pa getting by w/out her, I am realizing that I get more done when I have less time in which to do it, and that I am happier when I am busy, than when I am stress-free with lots of time on my hands. Sounds weird to admit... Don't get me wrong, I love time off and especially my weekends, but I guess I just mean that sometimes I prefer to be busy. 'Nuff said.... Enjoy!

If Something’s Wrong, Everything’s Alright

My room’s a mess
Papers need grading
Sub plans are calling my name
I’m up too late
I ate too much sugar
Being short on time is what I blame

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

Without treasured items a mess could not be made
Glad to have a job from which the papers grow,
Freedom to go where I need to go
My rhythm can’t be bound to that of a structured bedtime so
At night I gain my second wind to create and work and flow
The clock is ticking seconds pass, yet worry I do not
Everything will come together in time and I do know

Perfection's unattainable
My habits seem unchangeable
So I ponder on this thought,

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

My room immaculate
No work to do
In bed by nine
May sound just fine
But bored is what I’d be
Predictably practical is what I seek
But why?
Deep down I know,

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

Without a challenge or two
No list of things to do
We’d float through our day and you’d see
The boredom set in, for both you and me
Although the stress at times may come to engulf you in its cloud
And the daunting challenges can be so loud
These hills and mountains
Build you…. stronger
Change you… for better
Shape you… into someone new

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

So make your to do list
Don’t cringe one bit
You’re here for a reason
Keep on pushing and remember,

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

Perfection unattainable
A mess the status quo
This truth I know,

If something’s wrong, everything’s alright

If nothing’s wrong…
Are YOU alright…?

This poem is kind of a mish mosh of a mess, but I had fun writing this and it destressed me a bit. Tomorrow will be a busy day. I am determined not to leave work until my sub plans are done. Then when I get home I will pack and everything will be all good.

Peace Out.
